License Delegation Matrix: Console vs PC
| Device / Identity | License Mechanism Utilized | Simultaneous Play Allowed? | Required Account State |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary Xbox Console (Set as Home Xbox) | Hardware Device License (Decoupled from active gamertag) | YES | Any guest or family profile can play offline or online |
| Secondary Xbox Console | User Gamertag License | NO (Cannot share active session with same account) | Purchaser must remain signed into Xbox Live |
| Windows 10/11 PC (Xbox App) | Microsoft Store Account License | YES (Can co-op simultaneously with Home Xbox) | Purchaser logs into MS Store; family member logs into Xbox App |
| Mobile / Cloud Gaming (xCloud) | Active Game Pass Ultimate Profile License | NO (One cloud stream per active Ultimate entitlement) | Purchaser only; cannot be delegated via Home console |
Many households purchase games digitally under the impression that only one person can play at a time. Through Microsoft's dual entitlement architecture (Hardware License + User Account License), two people can play the exact same digital purchase cooperatively across an Xbox console and a PC simultaneously.
Phase 1: Configuring Co-op Simultaneous Play Across Xbox and PC
Step 1: Designate Your Physical Home Xbox
- On your physical Xbox Series X/S or Xbox One, sign in with the Purchasing Account (Account A).
- Navigate to
Settings -> General -> Personalization -> My home Xbox. - Check Make this my home Xbox. (Note: Microsoft limits Home Xbox switches to 5 times per 12-month rolling period).
- Once set, Account A can sign out. Any family member (Account B) can sign into this console and access Account A's entire digital library, DLCs, and Game Pass benefits.
Step 2: Configure the Gaming PC
- On the PC, open the Microsoft Store application. Sign in with Account A (the owner of the games).
- Open the Xbox App on Windows. Sign in with Account B (the player).
- In the Xbox App settings, enable Offline Permissions.
- Both Account B (on Xbox console) and Account B (on PC) can launch the multiplayer title simultaneously, invite each other to a party, and play together on a single digital purchase.
Phase 2: Resolving Error 0x803f8001 ("Do you own this game or app?")
When a family member launches a shared game and gets error 0x803f8001:
- Verify Home Xbox Binding: The license server lost sync. Have Account A sign into the Xbox, disable "My home Xbox", and re-enable it to refresh the hardware ticket.
- Microsoft Store Service Desync on PC:
- Press
Win + R, typewsreset.exe, and press Enter to clear Store cache. - Verify that Account A is signed into the Windows Store while Account B is in the Xbox App.
- Run
services.mscand ensure Gaming Services, Microsoft Store Install Service, and Xbox Live Auth Manager are set to Automatic.
- Press
Verification Checklist
- Verify that Account B can launch the game on the Home Xbox without Account A being signed in.
- Verify that Account A (or B) can simultaneously run the game on PC and connect to the same co-op lobby.
- Confirm remaining Home Xbox switch count does not exceed the 5-switch annual threshold.
