Windows Multi-Plane Overlay (MPO) is a display driver architecture introduced to reduce GPU memory bandwidth and latency by allowing the graphics chip to composite multiple display surfaces (such as a 3D game viewport, a 2D desktop UI, and video overlays) directly in hardware scanout, bypassing DWM composition copies.

However, driver discrepancies frequently cause MPO to corrupt frame pacing, stutter during G-Sync operation, or flash momentary black screens.

Phase 1: Disabling MPO via the Official NVIDIA Registry Key

Disabling MPO forces Windows DWM to fall back to traditional desktop composition, instantly curing black screens:

  1. Open Notepad as Administrator.
  2. Paste the following registry configuration:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Dwm]
    "OverlayTestMode"=dword:00000005

  3. Save the file on your desktop as mpo_disable.reg (ensure the extension is .reg, not .reg.txt).
  4. Double-click mpo_disable.reg and confirm the UAC security prompt.
  5. Restart your computer.

To Re-enable MPO Later (If Desired):

Delete the OverlayTestMode value or set it to 0:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Dwm]
"OverlayTestMode"=-

Phase 2: Resolving Mismatched Multi-Monitor Refresh Rates

If you game on a 144 Hz / 240 Hz primary monitor with a secondary 60 Hz monitor running Discord or OBS:

  1. In the NVIDIA Control Panel -> Set up G-SYNC.
  2. Change the setting from "Enable for windowed and full screen mode" to "Enable for full screen mode only".
  3. In Windows Display Settings, enable Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) under Graphics Settings.
  4. This stops background 60 FPS video animations from locking the primary gaming display's refresh rate down to 60 Hz.
